One thing we all could use more of is sleep! The business of life tends to get in the way, and while balancing work, life, friends and family, you may feel a bit burned out and exhausted. Well it is a new year and while you’re making those resolutions and trying to set new habits, here are five New Year’s resolutions that can help you make getting more rest a priority.
1. Create A Sleep Schedule
Creating a consistent sleep schedule and sticking to it is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your sleep quality. Try going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning, even on weekends. This will help your body adjust to your new sleep pattern and get used to falling asleep and waking up during the same time each day.
2. Cut Out Caffeine
Consuming caffeine late in the day can result in disrupted sleep and make it harder for you to fall asleep or stay asleep through the night. Try drinking decaffeinated beverages like tea, coffee, smoothies or water after mid-afternoon to ensure caffeine doesn’t interfere with your sleep.
3. Invest In A Quality Mattress
To get a truly restful night of sleep, a good quality mattress can do wonders for you. If it has been 8-10 years since you changed your mattress, it might be time to invest in a new one. A good mattress can make all the difference when it comes to getting quality sleep. Look for mattresses that are comfortable and supportive so your body is well rested through the night.
4. Avoid Naps
Napping during the day can throw off your sleep schedule and make it harder for you to fall asleep at night. While a short nap of 15-20 minutes in the afternoon may be beneficial, avoid napping too close to bedtime as this can have an adverse effect on your sleep.
5. Reduce Screen Time
The blue light from electronic devices can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps promote sleepiness. Try to reduce your screen time an hour before bed and keep all electronic devices away from your bedroom. Reading a book or doing a calming activity like yoga or meditation may help you relax and get ready for sleep.
The benefits of getting a good nights sleep are endless, so making better sleep a priority will undoubtedly being those benefits to many aspects of your life! If you make these 5 simple New Year’s resolutions, you should be able to improve your sleep quality in the coming year. Good luck and sweet dreams!
