5 Helpful Care Tips for Storing Your Cannabis at Home

Storing cannabis properly is important to avoid breaking down the cannabinoids and terpenes within the plant. While more than 100 cannabinoids occur naturally in marijuana, the two most discussed are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Terpenes exist in many plants, including cannabis. These chemical compounds account for color, flavor, and aroma.

When storing cannabis at home, there are definite guidelines for maintaining its quality. Oxygen, heat, and UV light can contribute to degrading the elements of marijuana. THC, CBD, and the terpenes will weaken over time, and THC will change into a weaker cannabinoid known as CBN.

1- Glass is Best

During the curing time, marijuana leaves and flowers are best contained in glass. Mason jars with lids can be filled about three-quarters full to leave an air gap. Leaves and flowers should be stored in separate jars.

Jars continue to be ideal storage containers after curing, but they can be packed tighter so there is less oxygen. It is important to keep the cannabis jars in the dark and to control the humidity and temperature. Humidity is best at 55-62 percent to avoid mold and mildew growth, and humidity packs are available to help. A safe rule for temperature is to store jars of cannabis at 70ºF or lower.

2- Vacuum-Packed is Good

Plastic bags are not considered suitable for storing cannabis long-term. However, vacuum-sealed plastic is perfect; it will keep oxygen and moisture from degrading marijuana.

Vacuum-sealed packages used for food savers work well and can be kept in the freezer or a cool, dark, dry cupboard for a year or more if no moisture enters the bag. Cannabis packs stored in the freezer should be brought out and thawed without opening. Once it has thawed, open the vacuum pack and transfer the cannabis to a jar.

3- Additional Suitable Containers

Cannabis should not be stored in most metal containers because the alloys can alter the taste and scent, but airtight titanium canisters are fine. The same is true of ceramic jars. These containers are normally good at limiting light but should also be stored in a cool dry area of the home.

4- Storing Pre-Rolls, Edibles, Concentrates, and Oils

The consistent rule of thumb for storing cannabis products is to use airtight containers and place them in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Pre-rolls and joints should be kept in the airtight tube containers they come in from the cannabis dispensary. However, the longevity of cannabinoids and terpenes is much less than it is for flowers.

Edibles such as gummies and chocolates can be stored in food-safe containers in the original packaging and kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Concentrates and Oils can likewise be stored in airtight containers and kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator for a longer shelf life.

5- Keep it Away from Children

When storing any cannabis in the home, it is important to keep children safe. The suggestion of airtight containers, placed in cool, dry, and dark places can be taken one step further when children are in the home. Marijuana products should always be kept hidden and completely out of reach of curious young ones.
