Getting quality rest is key to the health of your body and your brain. If you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, it could be that your sleeping routine needs work. Making sure that the components of your sleeping space help you focus on rest is key.
Consider Density
Make sure your mattress is suited to your sleeping style. As a general rule, side sleepers need the softest mattress, back sleepers need a medium-firm mattress, and tummy sleepers need the firmest mattress.
If you and your partner or spouse have very different sleeping styles, it may be necessary to put two twin mattresses together, side by side. A topper to add softness can also be added to one half of the mattress.
Sleep Cool
A gel foam mattress can also cool off or warm up your current sleeping situation. If your current mattress tends to get warm and stay warm, summers can be a misery. Investing in a cool gel pillow top may improve your rest. Cotton sheets and fans can also help to allow you to sleep comfortably.
If you wake up stiff and sore from sleeping on a firm mattress because you sleep cooler by not sinking into the top, be aware that there are other options. Side sleepers can really suffer on a firm mattress, especially if they don’t have appropriate pillows.
Cooling mattresses and toppers soften with body heat and allow you to settle into the mattress. If you like to sleep in a cold space, make getting into bed early part of your winding down process so you can pre-warm the mattress a bit. In a cold room, a cooling gel or foam mattress can be quite stiff.
Get a Bigger Bed
If you and your partner go from cuddling to wrestling because there isn’t room for both of you in the bed, invest in a bigger bed and a bigger mattress. Invest in a simple, sturdy platform bed to hold your new mattress while you test out the feel of this new sleeping space.
Accessories
Consider mattress thickness before you choose your platform bed frame. A very plush mattress can be quite tall; putting this mattress on a tall bed frame may mean scaling your way into bed each night. Keep things low and focus on quality rest.
A wedge pillow that helps you sit up and read for a bit before bedtime is a terrific tool to help you wind down at the end of the day. A cooling pillow can be useful to lower your discomfort on hot nights. Tummy sleepers may prefer no pillow at all!
Consider investing in separate blankets for each sleeper. If your bed just isn’t big enough anymore, part of the conflict could be over blankets.
Poor sleep is linked to a variety of serious conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. You need to get into the deepest state of sleep to cleanse your brain and allow your body to heal. The right mattress is key to quality of life.
